Effective Diagnosis and Personalized Treatment Plans to Restore Movement and Quality of Life
What is Polymyalgia Rheumatica?
Polymyalgia Rheumatica is an inflammatory disorder that causes muscle pain and stiffness, primarily in the shoulders, neck, hips, and upper arms. It most commonly affects adults over the age of 50, and women are more likely to develop the condition. The stiffness is usually worse in the morning or after periods of inactivity, often improving gradually throughout the day.
Key Symptoms of PMR:
-
Morning stiffness lasting longer than 30–60 minutes
-
Aching or pain in the shoulders, neck, hips, or thighs
-
Difficulty raising arms, combing hair, or getting out of a chair
-
Fatigue, mild fever, or weight loss in some cases
PMR vs. Other Conditions:
PMR can sometimes be confused with other conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, or even age-related muscle weakness. Our thorough diagnostic process ensures an accurate diagnosis, which is critical for effective treatment.
How We Diagnose PMR:
Diagnosis is based on your medical history, physical exam, and key laboratory tests (such as ESR and CRP, which measure inflammation). In some cases, we may use ultrasound imaging to assess inflammation around joints and tendons.
We also screen for Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA), a serious condition that can occur alongside PMR and may cause headaches, scalp tenderness, or vision problems. Early detection of GCA is essential to prevent complications.
Treatment Approach:
-
Low-dose corticosteroids
-
Tapering protocols to minimize side effects while maintaining symptom control
-
Monitoring for relapses or medication side effects
-
Lifestyle support including movement strategies and nutritional guidance
Why Patients Trust Our Care:
We take pride in helping patients with PMR regain their independence and confidence. Our approach is centered around education, accessibility, and empathy. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or seeking a second opinion, we’re here to guide you toward lasting relief and improved function.
At Houston Rheumatology and Arthritis Specialist, we believe that movement is medicine—and we’re dedicated to helping you move through life with ease and assurance.
